Does BCP Work on My Dog Too?
We’ve got a little sign at the market stall that says “pet friendly,” and honestly, it gets a lot of attention. People spot it, stop, and you can see them working up to the question — “hang on… would this be alright for my dog?” Usually they’ve got an old rescue lab with stiff back legs, or a Cavoodle that’s anxious about that trip in the car.
So I went and did what I always do when I don’t want to just guess — I sat down and actually read the research. Turns out there’s more of it than I expected, and it’s genuinely interesting. So grab a cuppa, because I want to explain this properly rather than just slapping “good for pets!” on a sign.
Every Mammal Is Running the Same System
Here’s the bit that surprised me the first time I learned it. Every mammal — humans, dogs, cats, horses — has what’s called an endocannabinoid system, or ECS. It’s not a “cannabis thing.” It’s a built-in signalling network that every one of us is born with, part of how mammal bodies were designed to keep themselves balanced. It’s involved in things like how the immune system responds, how the body manages everyday wear and tear, and general balance day to day.
The ECS works through receptors sitting on cells throughout the body — mainly two types, called CB1 and CB2. CB1 tends to be more active in the brain and nervous system. CB2 is the one that shows up heavily on immune cells and around joints, and it’s the one BCP (beta-caryophyllene) has an affinity for. Because dogs, cats and horses all carry this same receptor system, it’s not a stretch to say their bodies “recognise” BCP in a similar way to ours — the mechanism is shared, even though every animal (and every product) still needs its own consideration.
What Is BCP, Again?
For anyone new here — BCP is a natural compound found in cloves, black pepper, and heaps of other plants (we’ve written more about terpenes and why BCP is the odd one out if you want to go deeper). Our Ultra BCP Oil is extracted from cloves. It’s classified as a terpene, not a cannabinoid drug, and it contains zero THC. Researchers have pointed out that it’s naturally present in everyday spices and food plants.
What the Animal Research Actually Shows
I’m not going to pretend Canna-Oils has run clinical trials on dogs — we haven’t, and I’d never claim otherwise. But the broader scientific literature on BCP and the endocannabinoid system in animals is worth knowing about, so you can make your own informed call.
Joints and mobility. A study looking specifically at the hip and stifle (knee) joints of middle-aged dogs found that CB2 receptors were strongly present in the joint tissue itself — more so than the other cannabinoid receptors — and were also found on immune cells within the joint. The researchers noted this pattern suggests the ECS could be a useful avenue for future joint-related research in dogs. That’s a big part of why so many customers with older, stiffer dogs are curious about BCP in the first place — the receptors it interacts with are sitting right there in the joint.
The nervous system and inflammation. Separate veterinary research looking at inflammatory conditions of the canine central nervous system found that CB2 receptor expression increased significantly in affected tissue compared to healthy dogs, reinforcing that this receptor system becomes more active exactly where the body is already working to manage inflammation.
Everyday comfort. Outside of dogs specifically, one of the foundational animal studies on BCP found that when it was given orally, it eased later-stage inflammatory pain responses through the CB2 receptor pathway, and in a separate chronic pain model, it reduced heightened sensitivity to both heat and touch.
Settling and mood. Mouse studies on BCP have looked at its relationship to calm, settled behaviour, with researchers suggesting it may help ease anxiety-type responses, working through the same CB2 pathway.
So Where Does This Leave Your Dog?
Honestly, it leaves us in “watch this space” territory. Because of what we learnt above, owners tend to reach for BCP-based products around:
- Ageing joints and everyday mobility, especially in bigger or older dogs
- General settling and calm, particularly around thunderstorms, fireworks or new environments
- Skin that seems irritated or itchy, given CB2 receptors are also active in skin and immune tissue
- Simply supporting the body’s day-to-day balance, the same way we’d think about it for ourselves
So as you’ve probably guessed, I’m not a vet — so if your pet has any ongoing health concerns, please talk to your vet first, especially before adding anything new to a senior dog’s routine or a dog on other medication. Cats process plant compounds very differently to dogs, so you should definitely check with your vet first before giving anything to a cat.
