Can Topical Beta-Caryophyllene Help Reduce Sun and Age Spots?

A few weeks ago someone asked if applying BCP topically could help reduce their sunspots. Great question! Well, the short answer is that while topical beta-caryophyllene (BCP) shows exciting potential for reducing the appearance of sun and age spots, there are no definitive human clinical trials to “guarantee” it will erase them.

Thankfully, I was able to find some preclinical research that indicates that this remarkable terpene — found in black pepper, cloves, copaiba and many other plants — may inhibit the very processes that cause these dark marks to form. Interesting! So early prevention may be the key!

How does it do this? By modulating the pathways responsible for melanin production. So beta-caryophyllene (BCP) could offer a natural approach to maintaining an even skin tone and protecting the skin from the visible signs of photoaging.

Understanding the Science of Skin Pigmentation

Sunspots and age spots are known as ‘solar lentigines’, which occur when our skin produces an excess of melanin in response to UV exposure, and/or unfortunately, it’s just the natural ageing process. This overproduction is often driven by an enzyme called tyrosinase.

I did find some recent research that highlighted beta-caryophyllene (BCP) as a potent “anti-melanogenic” agent. The study was published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and found that beta-caryophyllene (BCP) “could reduce melanogenesis by down-regulating the expression of MITF, TRP-1, TRP-2 and tyrosinase, resulting in a decrease in melanin content.” This suggests that applying BCP topically may help slow down the “clumping” of melanin that leads to visible spots.

Beyond Spot Reduction: The Multi-Faceted Benefits of BCP

If your primary goal is reducing the appearance of age spots that you already have, you will be very pleased to know that I also found research into how beta-caryophyllene supports skin health in several other profound ways. Even if it doesn’t completely “erase” a deep-set spot, it works behind the scenes to rejuvenate the skin’s overall texture and resilience.

“Beta-caryophyllene (BCP) is a highly selective CB2 agonist that directly engages the peripheral anti-inflammatory axis of the endocannabinoid system, offering a mechanistically defined, non-psychotropic, and targeted therapeutic approach to skin health.” — Pharmaceuticals, 2025

One of the most well-documented benefits of BCP is its ability to accelerate wound healing. Research published in PLOS ONE demonstrated that BCP enhances “re-epithelialization” — the process by which the skin repairs its outermost layer — by increasing cell proliferation and migration. BCP may help restore a thicker, more youthful barrier for skin that has thinned due to age or sun damage.

A Natural Shield Against Environmental Stress

Beta-caryophyllene (BCP) also has powerful antioxidant properties. The Pharmaceuticals study stated that “BCP exhibits coherent CB2-mediated anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, antioxidant, and reparative actions with a favorable safety profile.” By boosting these internal defences, BCP could help protect the skin from the oxidative stress caused by pollution and UV radiation — the two primary culprits behind premature ageing and the formation of new sun spots.

Here is a summary of some pre-clinical studies that have been conducted:

Key Mechanism Benefit for Skin Spots Scientific Evidence
Melanogenesis Inhibition Reduces the production of new melanin, preventing spot darkening. Kim et al. (2015)
Antioxidant Support Neutralizes free radicals from UV rays that trigger pigmentation. Bagher (2025)
CB2 Receptor Activation Calms skin inflammation, which can otherwise lead to post-inflammatory marks. Hashiesh et al. (2020)

How to Use Canna Oils BCP for Your Skin

At Canna Oils, our BCP oil is 97% pure and formulated for safe topical application. While it can be used directly, you may choose to blend it with a nourishing carrier oil like hemp seed oil or mix it into your favourite skin cream for a more customised experience — or you could use our Ultra Blend product that already has hemp seed oil added!

While we wait for more data on its ability to remove established age spots, the current science suggests that BCP may help prevent new spots, soothe inflammation, and support the skin’s natural repair processes, making it a worthy addition to any natural, anti-ageing skincare regimen.
