We regularly get asked if our products could help with Psoriasis. So let’s take a look at what is Psoriasis at it’s core and what beta caryophyllene (BCP) is known to help with – and see what conclusion we can come to!
What is Psoriasis?
Here’s what the National Psoriasis Foundation has to say (emphasis mine): “Psoriatic disease is a chronic, immune-mediated systemic condition that includes psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It results from abnormal immune activity that promotes inflammation, which can affect the skin or the joints. Visibly, it is characterised in part by plaques and scales on the skin that result from the overactive immune system and rapid reproduction of skin cells. But because it is a systemic condition, there may be inflammation happening beneath the skin. If this inflammation affects the joints, it may result in swelling, stiffness and joint pain.”
What is Beta Caryophyllene?
Beta Caryophyllene (BCP) is a terpene found in literally over a thousand plants, including cloves, black pepper, hops, rosemary, and of course, cannabis and hemp. Canna Oils Ultra is isolated from the essential oil of the Clove plant. BCP oil is special because even though it is technically a terpene, it performs like a cannabinoid, which simply means that it binds directly to the CB2 receptors of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Because terpenes are the scent molecule of the plant, many terpenes in Australia are used in aromatherapy as well as orally and topically, as in the case of our products. BCP has been shown in numerous studies to support optimal inflammatory response and immune function. BCP is also know to have an analgesic effect as well many other benefits for general wellbeing.
Let’s bring this together!
As mentioned above, BCP binds directly to the CB2 receptors of the ECS (hence BCP Oil is also known as a CB2 Oil). The CB2 receptors, when activated, are known to influence pain, itch and mechanisms of inflammation. In a 2023 study, scientists found that activation of the CB2 receptor significantly improved skin issues. The treatment reduced the thickness of the skin and plaques, lowered inflammation, and decreased certain harmful molecules in the skin tissue.
The researchers believe that a specific pathway in the body, known as the Keap1/Nrf2 signalling pathway, may play a role in these effects. These findings suggest that targeting CB2 receptors could be a new and promising approach to treating psoriasis.
Additionally, other studies demonstrated that BCP has immunomodulatory effects. It works by inhibiting certain immune cells like microglial cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and by balancing the Th1/Treg immune response, again through activating the CB2 receptor. This process also involves reducing the activity of proteins called p38MAPK and NF-kB while increasing levels of a protein called Iba-1 and the inflammatory molecule IL-1β (sorry for the scientific jargon).
So, there are definitely studies out there that suggest that because of BCP Oil’s ability to activate the CB2 receptors, it just could be the natural pain relief that Psoriasis suffers have been looking for. As always, more studies are needed, but it’s a great start!!!
