Rapid Heart Rate – can BCP cause it?

Recently, we were contacted and asked if beta caryophyllene (BCP) could cause a rapid heart rate.  This is not a common response but, of course, we are all individual and our bodies may respond in unique ways.

In fact, there are studies that found that BCP can actually have a positive effect on the heart – one study suggested that BCP may have a protective effect on the heart, especially in conditions that can lead to a heart attack.

So let’s look at why some people may experience a rapid heart rate, and what can we do about it?

Firstly, I just want to say that I am not a medical professional and the information below is not meant to replace medical advice.

Why Might Beta-Caryophyllene Cause a Rapid Heart Rate?

Here are a few reasons why this BCP could make your heart race:

  1. Sensitive Response: Some people are more sensitive to BCP. This means that even a small amount can cause a stronger reaction, like a rapid heartbeat.
  2. Nervous System Interaction: BCP interacts with our body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which plays a role in regulating mood, pain, and heart rate. For some, this interaction might lead to a temporary increase in heart rate.
  3. Mixing with Other Substances: If you’ve had caffeine, certain medications, or other stimulants, the combination with BCP could amplify its effects, including making your heart race.
  4. Anxiety Response: For some individuals, the taking a new supplement or medication can trigger anxiety. Anxiety can, in turn, cause symptoms like a racing heart.
  5. Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some people might be allergic to BCP. An allergic reaction could manifest as heart palpitations, among other symptoms.

What Should You Do?

If you notice your heart racing after consuming Canna Oils BCP, we would recommend that you cut back or stop taking altogether. We usually recommend, cutting back to only 1 or 2 drops and stay at that level for a few days before increasing.  Take it lower and slower!!

If the symptoms persist or are severe, it’s important to talk to a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues.

Understanding how different compounds affect your body can help you make informed choices about what you choose to incorporate into your wellness journey. As with anything, listening to your body is essential.  If you are ever unsure about Canna Oils products, please reach out to us – we’re hear to help as much as we can!
